A Playbook of Playbooks
Like a pinecone, playbooks can be packed with seeds and potential for a thriving future.
Welcome to Regen Notes
a "playbook of playbooks" refers to a comprehensive collection or compilation of various playbooks on a theme.
If we consider a playbook akin to a pinecone packed with the seeds of ideas and potentials then two questions come to my mind ..
A playbook of playbooks isa forest, an eco system for thriving? … &
How will we take, adopt and adapt, share and be pollinators for playbook potentials?
With several playbooks published for the built environment it is worth stepping back to understand the importance of giving a document a playbook title and what is available, and in production
A Playbook?
In the business context, a playbook can be seen as a comprehensive resource that documents best practices, processes, and guidelines for achieving specific goals or handling common challenges. It provides a structured framework for decision-making, exploring potentials and executing tasks efficiently.
A typical playbook typically includes instruction, workflows, checklists, templates, and examples to facilitate consistent and effective actions. It aims to standardise procedures, promote collaboration and knowledge sharing, and ensure that individuals or teams are aligned with core objectives and values, whilst at the same time encouraging organisations to question entrenched practice, to co-create and seek greater potentials.
Circular Economy Playbook
Through the publication of The Circular Built Environment Playbook, the WorldGBC network aspires to increase awareness and accessibility of circular economy solutions, by guiding all stakeholders within the built environment value chain towards sustainable, circular decision-making.
“A built environment that facilitates the regeneration of resources and natural systems, whilst providing socio- economic benefits through a circular economy.”
The core principles of a circular economy for the built environment are:
Reduction in consumption of materials and resources,
Optimisation of lifespan for material and product use,
Design for disassembly, reuse and recycling, and the elimination of all waste, Regeneration of nature.
The Regenerative Playbook
Getting started with regenerative thinking in your organisation
It is designed as a first step in introducing Regenerative thinking, bringing sustainability and environmental approaches alive with questions and challenges to shift thinking. The Playbook contains a set of regenerative principles and challenges that have been used as the foundation for regenerative courses in construction organisations and social housing and has been adopted within organisations as a regenerative primer.
But what does (regenerative) mean? As this playbook shows, it means asking different and better questions, ones which can help us to recognise and work with the true interdependencies of our living world; it means nurturing the potential that all people and communities already have to be sources of health for all life on earth and giving that potential space to grow and be realised; and it means working not only to change ‘out there’ but also to change ‘in here’, our own mindsets and behaviours, and those of our organisations.
It means going on a journey, being humble, respecting one another and being ready to learn, especially from those communities who have stewarded traditional knowledge about how to live in good relationship with our world, and whose voices have often been marginalised. It means being ready to co-create and share, because the future doesn’t just happen, it’s up to us all to create it. Foreword by RSA
The Anti Green Wash Playbook.
Launched to coincide with the run-up to COP26, the Content Coms Anti-Greenwash Playbook is a call for greater transparency across the supply chain and an end to unsubstantiated ‘green claims’. The book has been met with a phenomenal response by readers all over the world. It provides practical and easy-to-follow advice for anyone involved in the marketing or selling of ‘green’ goods and services.
The AntiGreenWash Manifesto:
be accurate,
be authentic,
be truthful,
be human,
be transparent.
The Mass Timber Insurance Playbook
Aiming to foster collaboration between construction teams and insurers, promoting fair and accessible insurance options for mass timber buildings, the playbook offers comprehensive guidance for all parties involved in securing insurance for both the development and operation of mass timber projects.
Trust and productivity: The private sector construction playbook
Building on the work of the public sector Construction Playbook first published by the government in December 2020, Trust and Productivity harnesses
and adapts these learnings, and suggests new strategies to improve the delivery of projects across the private sector.
The Construction Playbook
The Construction Playbook is focused on getting projects and programmes right
from the start. Whether the delivery or refurbishment of a school, hospital or major infrastructure project, the principles and policies in this Playbook will transform how we assess, procure and manage public works projects and programmes.
We need to think about projects and programmes in new ways. Transformational change will only be achieved by systematically approaching risk, sustainability and innovation across portfolios of projects and programmes. We need to harness the excellence which already exists and learn from this to drive progress and strengthen the health of the sector, including by addressing low levels of productivity and future skills shortages. It is in all of our interests to create a profitable, sustainable and resilient industry with a well-trained workforce for the future.

Why should we take notice of playbooks?
Any and every organisation in the built environment should be embracing the themes found in these playbooks on regenerative, sustainability, circular economy and responsible construction practices As a collective they support environmental stewardship, can provide competitive advantage, ensure regulatory compliance, mitigating risk, fostering innovation, meeting stakeholder expectations, generating cost savings, and creates positive climate and social impact.
By integrating these themes into strategies, processes, and development, organisations can grow in the changing landscape and thrive on their journeys to a regenerative and healthy built environment.
