Lammas Greeting …
Lammas - The Celtic festival of Lunastal, Lunasdal or Lughnasadh, is one of the quarter-day festivals along with Imbolc, Beltane and Samhain and falls on the the First of August - it is a time that marks the start of harvesting. Lammas is associated with loaf, mass or feast - as in celbrating bread made from the first harvest grain. In nature, it marks the end of growing and the start of providing.
As we embrace regenerative thinking and seek to restore our connectivity with nature, we can learn from this - and see this as a time for reflection - on our growth over recent months and on fruits, we can now provide and share in the coming months. (Or gift, as Robin Wall Kimmerer notes that all of nature's fruit is a gift that we should treat with reciprocity.)
I was reminded of Lammas whilst listening to ‘As the Season Turns’ whilst foraging Bilberries on Beacon Fell to incorporate into sourdough bread. This is a balm of a podcast from the organic seasonal perfume people at Ffern, released on the first of each month, editions mark the changing seasons through nature, foraging, folklore, music, mosses, storytelling and more.
