Welcome,
Regen Notes is a newsletter of regenerative news, stories and more, curated by Martin Brown. It is a companion to Zoom Regenerative, where we join the regenerative dots, share the themes and work that invigorates, inspires and feeds our curiosity.
Regen Notes is 100% reader-funded. If you value independent regenerative curation and journalism, please consider supporting as a free or a paid subscriber.
Not intending for this to be another countdown to COP26, but with the UN conference only a month away now, the focus of climate and ecological problems, actions and solutions will undoubtedly be leading up to this important event.
The level of understanding of climate and indeed ecological emergency is mixed. From discussions with folk passionate about climate change, with sustainability practitioners, with environmental action group members, there is a good understanding of the problem we face. Yet how that relates to our lives, our communities, out business is less clear. And within the general public, few know of COP or (eg) what a 1.5° target means and how that relates to the everyday.
There is a dire need for greater climate literacy.
“wouldn’t it be great if people just got it on climate change? If people instinctively just knew what was good and bad, and these are the kinds of things we need to do,”
I was inspired joining the Camino to Cop (London/Bristol to Glasgow) walk over the weekend as it passed through our area in Lancashire. The walking discussion ranged across climate problems and solutions. We can all be activists in our way, but if we are passionate enough for a regenerative future, are we passionate enough to walk 500 miles. I would urge others to join such walks and discussions, even for a day, it is a great tonic.
Walking, ideally, is a state in which the mind, the body, and the world are aligned, as though they were three characters finally in conversation together, three notes suddenly making a chord. Walking allows us to be in our bodies and in the world without being made busy by them. It leaves us free to think without being wholly lost in our thoughts. Rebecca Solnit
Rounded up here are a few frameworks and programmes that can guide us towards COP and beyond.
Living Building Challenge
The framework core of seven petals provides guidance not just for (living) buildings, but for approaches we can take in our lives, communities and organisations.
How we relate to place, how we use energy and water, address carbon, how we ensure toxin-free materials in our lives, reduce plastics, support local economies, provide healthy and happy places, ensure just and equitable futures, how we relate and connect to nature and each other. And importantly, how we use our agency to both listen and to inspire others.
Project Drawdown
Project Drawdown just released a useful Climate Solutions guide, unleashing employee power
Inside most companies, only a handful of people with “sustainability” roles consider climate issues part of their workday. But in this most all-encompassing challenge in human history, every job must be a climate job
Netflix - Together For Our Planet
“Climate change and ecological devastation pose tremendous challenges to our very existence” Netflix has compiled a playlist of films and TV shows to highlight ‘this complex issue in deeply compelling ways’
BBC
The BBC has announced extensive coverage plans for the UN’s upcoming climate change conference in Glasgow, bringing audiences to the heart of November’s summit with special programming, news and digital coverage.
